๐Ÿพ Moments from Our Private Zoo: Tales of Quiet Guests and Warm Hearts

A gentle chronicle of wildlife, wonder, and whimsy from our little corner of Newton Le Willows.

Welcome to our secluded zoo, no tickets required, just a warm heart and a quiet gaze. From the comfort of our conservatory, my wife and I have spent countless hours watching, learning, and laughing with the creatures who visit us. Some are regulars, some rare guests, but all are part of the story.

๐Ÿฆ The Cast of Characters

- Patch Our pioneering blackbird, easily spotted by his twin white patches. A devoted father, he's raised his young on a steady diet of mealworms from our buffet.
- Golden-Ears A golden-eared squirrel who stole our hearts. We haven't seen him since spring, but his memory lingers like sunlight through leaves.
- Stubby My wife's round-tailed marvel. With no tail feathers and questionable aerodynamics, Stubby's landings are more comedy than grace. But he always pops his head up as if to say, "Nobody saw that, right?"
- Apache A magpie with war paint. His vivid head stripes earned him a name worthy of a tribal chieftain.
- The Boys (are back in town) Groups of mischievous starlings, sometimes numbered in the thirties, who always seem very vocal and excited to visit us. They love to dine on the mealworms and peanut butter mixes.
- The Starling Survivor Injured by a sparrow hawk, this brave little bird found refuge under our shed once I had rescued it. We fed and watered it daily, hoping its wing would heal. One day, it was gone. We choose to believe he flew again.
- The Watchers Song thrushes, wagtails, robins, tits, starlings and much more. Some seasonal, some fleeting, all treasured.
- Milly Our guardian. With radar ears and a bark that varies by Human or cat about, she's the protector of peace and the bane of prowling cats.

๐Ÿ‚ Moments That Matter

- Squirrels sitting just two feet away, crunching walnuts and watching us with cautious curiosity on our conservatory window ledge.
- The quiet joy of crafting and puzzling while nature performs its daily ballet.
- The thrill of rare visitors, the heartbreak of loss, and the hope of healing.

"When you sit still long enough, the world remembers you're part of it."

I share these stories not just to document, but to inspire. To remind our grandchildren and anyone who listens, that every creature deserves kindness. That even the smallest life is worth protecting. And that joy often comes not from what we do, but from what we notice.
